The Martha Washington Inn, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1832 as a private residence by a Virginia General. From private residence it evolved into a finishing school for young ladies, later served served as a hospital for wounded Civil War soldiers, and later still became a women’s college.
Today, the hotel is an elegant hotel and spa, and pays homage to its gracious Southern roots and enduring historic legacy. The Martha Washington Inn & Spa has the charm of antiquity and the convenience and amenities of a modern renovated hotel. It offers to its guests a natatorium (indoor dedicated swimming pool, heated, and open year round); French doors and a retractable roof bring the outside in in the warm summer months. A sundeck off the pool provides the perfect spot for a quiet read or warm relaxation in the sun.
The hotel also offers a full menu of services at The Spa at The Martha. The Spa features beautifully appointed treatment rooms, a Life-Fitness Gym with aerobic and weights, with adjacent dressing and locker rooms.
Hotel amenities include a morning newspaper and coffee, afternoon tea on Saturdays, a “goodnite” glass of Port in the Library, on the porch, or by the outdoor firepit, Jacuzzi with two soaking pools, two lighted Tennis Courts with special “cushioned” surface, a cozy library with over 1500 volumes of significant southern literature, bicycles for a spin around town or on The Creeper Trail, complimentary parking, high speed wireless internet, and a business center with computers placed thoughtfully throughout the hotel.
