Bubba Q Low Carb BBQ Sauce Recipe
This sweet and tasty low carb BBQ sauce was contributed by one of our post-bariatric WLS readers, but we found an original version (only slightly different) which was created by Perk’s Low Carb Recipes. It is sugar free (although it relies on artificially sweetened substitutes) and very savory. You can reduce calories further by using a low calorie butter substitute or other fat.
Ingredients
- 12 oz tomato paste
- 6 oz water
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon McCormick® Granulated Garlic
- ½ cup red wine vinegar
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon dry mustard
- 1 tablespoon ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
- ½ stick sweet cream butter
- 1 cup Splenda Brown Sugar Blend (or Brown Sugar)
- ¼ tablespoon sugar free maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon Fine Pink Salt
- 2 tablespoons red hot sauce
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients and simmer 1 hour.
- For roasted meats, baste onto meat during last 1/2 hour of cooking and/or serve warm at table.

Hey all, I originally created this recipe for my Dad, who was diabetic but loved his barbecue. The key ingredients are the low-carb ketchup, and brown-sugar Splenda. Most of the rest can be tweaked to your liking. I’ve passed this recipe along to several friends and family members who were trying to eat healthier, or were diabetic as well, and it always gets rave reviews.

Bubba’s Low-carb BBQ Sauce
12 oz low carb ketchup
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 tablespoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon ground ginger
1 tablespoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) sweet cream butter
1/4 cup brown sugar Splenda (to taste)
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon coarse black pepper
2 tablespoons Franks Red Hot Sauce
Combine all ingredients and simmer 1 hour or serve warm at the table.
