I am fortunate to have family who are long-time residents of the State of Hawai'i, a lovely state with lovely people.  The State of Hawai'i is comprised of eight beautiful islands, most of which will accommodate your visit.  A few exceptions are noted, below.  A great many spa guides and directories will provide lists of spa facilities, each with the state abbreviation for Hawai'i.  This can be confusing for visitors.  The entire group of Islands is known as the State of Hawai'i, however only the "Big Island" is actually named Hawai'i, whereas the remaining seven Islands each have a unique name.  Finding a spa facility by "City name" can be confusing when that city could be on any one of eight islands, with city names duplicating themselves on more than one island.  Here is a list of our favorite Spas in Hawai'i, broken out by Island, with a brief introduction to each Island.  -- Spa Index Editor

KAUA'I

Kauai, Hawai'i

Kaua'i is known as the "Garden Isle" is often called the most beautiful of the Island, known for its sheer splendor because it is not heavily populated or developed, its resort areas are restricted to only a few locations, and natural erosion has created dramatic, soaring cliffs and landscapes. Kauai's inhabitants were the first to come in contact with Europeans, when Captain Cook landed near Waimea in 1778.  This island suffered terribly from Hurricane Iniki in 1992, and many resorts and tourist areas were destroyed.  Rebuilding progressed rapidly  and it is once again a beautiful destination.

KAHO'OLAWE

Kaho'olawe Coast, Hawai'i

Kaho'olawe is not open to tourists at this time. The island was a religious center for Hawaiians for many generations -- over a thousand years.  The most prominent and oldest Hawaiian shrines may be found on Kaho'olawe.  Navigators guiding the ocean voyages of early Hawaiians were trained at Kaho'olawe, which is only 11 miles long and eight miles across.  This island, between 1920 and 1990, was used for target practice by the U.S. Army and Navy, at which time bombing was halted by President Bush, and steps taken to return the Island to Hawaiian control.  The Island is on the road to once again becoming an important resource and it is anticipated that  restoration of the island, as much as possible, to clean environmental conditions and the rehabilitation of the shrines and traditional Hawaiian structures will help this ancient place heal.

LANA'I

Lana`i Coastline, Hawai'i

Lana`i is called the "most enticing island", because it is removed from the pressures of the outside world -- even the other islands -- enjoys ideal weather, is populated by warm, friendly residents, and offers outdoor adventures, water sports, golf, white sand beaches and wonderful accommodations.

On the tiny, pristine island of Lana'i, two Four Seasons resorts provide a one-of-a-kind experience – presenting both ocean and highlands landscapes and balancing a sense of tranquility with an abundance of recreational activities.

Four Seasons Resort Lana'i at Manele Bay is perched atop a rugged red-lava cliff above a white-sand beach. It offers two golf courses, a spa and dynamic adventure amidst pristine, natural landscapes.

The Lodge at Koele is secluded within the dramatic central highlands, providing a gracious retreat amidst manicured gardens along with two golf courses and a wealth of recreation options.

MOLOKA'I

Moloaka'i Valley, Hawai'i

Moloaka'i is known as the "Friendly Island" because the aloha spirit flourishes here and also the "Most Hawai'ian" island because nearly 40% of its population are Hawai'ian descendents and it is the birthplace of the traditional hula dance.

Moloaka'i has only in recent years permitted tourists on the Island, and its residents are loyal in protecting its pristine white beaches and undeveloped tropical landscape.   For instance, not a single traffic light exists on the island, and its guests arrive typically by ferry boat, with limited air transportation (charter inter-island flights, no major airlines).  In addition to the spa resort below, Moloka'i  offers beautiful beaches, friendly locals, small inns, golf, camping and hiking trails.

The beauty of the island is also in its people and its history.  For sixteen years, Moloaka'i was home to Father Damien's mission devoted to a community of those suffering from Hansen's Disease. Father Damien, a Belgian priest, came to Kalaupapa, Molokai in 1873 to minister to the needs of the dying.  He succumbed to the disease in 1889.  Sulfone drugs developed in the early 1940s, put the disease in remission and the carriers were no longer contagious. Today less than 100 residents call Kalaupapa home. The peninsula is now a National Historic Site administered by the US Park Service.  It is also the home of the few former patients who chose to remain here -- their home. Consequently, access, is by law, strictly regulated.

The Molokai Visitors Association can assist you with all the information you need to know about visiting, accommodations, restaurants, services, and can provide details on Ka Hula Piko, the annual hula celebration.
