The Kingdom of Norway is in Northern Europe and occupies the western portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula. It is known for its beautiful rugged coastline, fjords and thousands of islands. It is known as the "Land of the Midnight Sun" because from late May to late July, the sun does not completely descend below the horizon in areas north of the Arctic Circle, so the rest of the country typically gets up to 20 hours of daylight per day. Then, from late November through January, the sun does not complete rise above the horizon, so daylight hours are typically very short. The most populous cities in Norway are Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, Trondheim, Fredrikstad, Drammen, Skien, Kristiansand, Tromsø, Tønsberg, Ålesund, Haugesund, Moss, Sandefjord, Bodø, Arendal, Hamar, Larvik, Halden, and Lillehammer, site of the 1994 Winter Olympics. |
