Mathilde Cathiard-Thomas and her husbaqnd, Bertrand Thomas are credited with creating both the World's first "wine spa" -- Les Sources de Caudalie -- which opened in 1999 in the Bordeaux region of France, as well as the official term Vinothérapie®.

Previously, in 1993, the Thomas' met an eminent professor from the Faculty of Pharmaceutics at Bordeaux University on the estate of the Château Smith Haut Lafitte. The revelation he made would open the way to a new approach to skincare. He had discovered that the grape seeds discarded at the end of the grape harvest contained powerful anti-aging properties.  These grape seeds contain polyphenols which, once stabilized, have priceless benefits for the skin. The anti-oxidants contained in the grape seed polyphenols have an incredible capacity to fight free radicals, and therefore fight aging. The free-radical protection from grape seed polyphenols is unequalled in the plant world. We are fortunate to be able to sample and use a great many spa products, and we develop favorites rarely -- there are just too many to try and use in the course of our research.   So, when we do have favorites, it's a headline, around here.   One line of products that has become one of our very favorites -- and not just for vinotherapy -- is Aqua Dessa, handmade products from Napa Valley, California.  These natural products are quite a few notches about your average hand-crafted products, and when it comes to performance, Aqua Dessa, competes with globally marketed, slickly advertised products with ease. 

The all-natural, organic products contain only premium ingredients and have “no fillers, water, thickeners, synthetic chemicals or animal by-products.”

In particular, we love the Aqua Dessa Napa Valley Wine Scrub. This light, loose and earthy smelling scrub has honey and wine as its primary ingredients, resulting in an earthy and pungent aroma and the perfect all-natural exfoliating treatment -- suitable for most skin types.  The exfoliating factor comes from crushed grape seeds, similar in size and texture to ground coffee.  The scrub leaves our skin satin smooth and fresh, and without a "greasy feeling" (oily is not the same as moisturized and we don't know why so many commercial and spa scrubs misunderstand that concept).  The scrub can be used by men and women alike as it won't leave a perfumed scent.  A word of caution, however. Since Aqua Dessa doesn't use preservatives or thickeners, relying solely on quality excellent ingredients, you will find this scrub light, loose, and thinner than most commercial brands.   No matter -- a little goes a very long way and you'll use every drop, with better results than oil and salt.  Be prepared to rinse down the grape seeds after your shower scrub experience. Unlike salt, the seeds don't melt away down the drain, which is actually a good thing.

 Thank you so much for sharing the information about Aqua Dessa and the wine scrub.  As as soon as I read the part about scrubs, when you said "being oiled is not the same as being moisturized" I knew I could trust your review!  I hate that oily feeling, too, and always feel like I have to take another shower after using salt scrubs.  So, I went out and bought the wine scrub, and what can I say, but, this is the perfect scrub for me, too.  I gave some to my sister, and she kept the jar. She got married on Saturday last week, and, kept the scrub and used it on her wedding day.
